DHAKA, Jan 16, 2018 (BSS) – Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi today laid emphasis on diversification of jute production for regaining the lost glory of the golden fiber.

“Diversification of jute production will significantly contribute to widen export volume in the country,” he told a view-exchange meeting with Bangladesh Charcoal Manufacturers and Exporter Association (BCMEA) in the conference room of Textile and Jute Ministry here, an official release said.

Dastagir said activated charcoal from jute stick has opened a new chapter in the jute sector as Bangladesh is exporting activated charcoal to China.

In 2012, Bangladesh has commercially produced activated charcoal and the country exported activated charcoal to China at the same year, he added.

There are huge demands of activated charcoal in many countries including Japan, Brazil, Turkey, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada and Mexico, he added.

At the meeting, the BCMEA leaders said Bangladesh can increase export volume through exporting jute products to these countries.

A total of 30 lakh metric tons jute sticks are produced in the country, they said adding 50 percent jute stick can be used for producing charcoal. As many as 2.50 lakh tonnes charcoal could be used in the country every year, the BCMEA leaders added.
