AL starts selling nomination papers for women reserved seats

DHAKA, Jan 15, 2019 (BSS) – The ruling Awami League (AL) has started
selling nomination forms for aspirants to its 43 reserved seats for women in
the 11th parliament.

AL General Secretary and also Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul
Quader formally inaugurated the selling of nomination papers for the reserved
seats from the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office around 10 this
morning.

“The aspirants can collect nomination forms till declaration of the
election schedule for 50 reserved seats by the Election Commission (EC) with
paying Taka 30,000 from the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office,” said
AL Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, MP.

Among others, Joint General Seretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, Organising
Secretary and also Deputy Minister for Water Resource Ministry AKM Enamul
Haque Shamim, Women Affairs Minister Fazilatun Nesa Indira, Agriculture
Affairs Secretary Faridun Nahar Laily and Deputy Office Secretary Barrister
Biplob Barua were present, among others, on the occasion.

The EC is expected to announce the schedule for 50 parliamentary seats
election for women reserved seats on February 17. The EC has a legal
obligation to hold election to 50 reserved seats within 90 days after
publication of the gazette notification.

In line with the law, the reserved seats’ distribution will reflect the
seat share in the directly elected 300 constituencies. According to the
proportional representation in the Parliament, Awami League has got 43
reserved seats, while Jatiya Party 4 seats, BNP one and others will get the
remaining two.

AL has already got 257 seats out of 300 parliamentary constituencies
across the country, while Jatiya Party 22 seats, BNP six seats, Workers’
Party three constituencies, Gano Forum, Jasod and Bikalpadhara each in two
seats, Tarikat Federation and JP each in one seat in the recent 11th general
election.

Whereas, independent candidates were elected in three constituencies in
the national polls held on December 30 last. The EC will hold polls to one
remaining constituency on January 27, as the election in the constituency was
postponed following death of a candidate.
