No building construction to be allowed in city violating law : Rezaul Karim

DHAKA, Jan 14, 2019 (BSS) – Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim today said the government will not allow construction of any buildings in the city violating the respective building construction act.

“The government will take strict position regarding the construction of the buildings as per the rules,” the minister said this following a review meeting of Urban Resilience Project on Earthquake preparedness by Rajdhani Unnayan Karthipakhya (RAJUK) at ministry’s conference room here.

The government is identifying the risky and old buildings which are unsuitable for residing, he said, adding that the government will ask the building owners to demolish those risky buildings.

The government will take necessary action against the building owners if they did not implement the government instruction, said the minister who also chaired it.

Karim said Bangladesh is now in earthquake risk, adding that so, we have to follow the building construction act for construction of any buildings for keeping largely the disaster related loss within tolerable limit.

Even the government will take strict position for construction of new buildings as per the law, the minister mentioned. At the same time awareness campaign also will be carried out on the issue among the mass people, he added.

Concerned officials including Housing and Public Works Secretary M Shahidullah Khondoker, Additional Secretary M Akhter Hossen, RAJUK Chairman M Abdur Rahman, Director General of Fire Service Department Brigadier General Ali Ahmed, BUET Professor Mehedi Al Ansari, Tokyo University Professor Kimiro Meguro and RAJUK member Major (retd) Shams, among others, attended the meeting.
