DU holds dialogue with student bodies on DUCSU constitution

DHAKA, Jan 10, 2019 (BSS) – With a view to making a befitting constitution for Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Hall Unions, the university authority today held a dialogue with active students’ organizations.

The DU authority extended deadline for the student bodies to submit their recommendations making amendment to the existing DUCSU constitution till January 14, Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, chief of the five-member committee formed to take suggestions from student organizations to this end, told journalists.

The meeting was held between the committee and the student’s bodies from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the conference room of University’s Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building.

Members of the committee — Masterda Surja Sen Hall Provost Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal, Kabi Jasimuddin Hall Provost Dr. Md. Rahmat Ullah, Ruqayyah Hall Provost Professor Dr. Zeenat Huda and Shamsunnahar Hall Provost Dr. Supriya Saha were present at the meeting with Law Dept Prof Mizanur Rahman in the chair.

The DUCSU constitution was last amended in 1998.

Representatives from the student bodies including Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), BNP’s student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Bangladesh Chhatra Union took part in the discussion.

“Another meeting will be held on January 14 and student organizations will submit rest of their recommendations on the issue”, said Dr. Mizanur Rahman.

BCL DU unit president Sonjit Chandra Das and general secretary Saddam Hussain; JCD DU unit president Al Mehedi Talukder and general secretary Abul Bashar Siddique; Chhatra Union DU unit President Foez Ullah and Chhatra Federation DU unit president Umme Habiba Benojir were also present.

After the meeting Sanjit Chandra Das said, “DUCSU election is our longstanding demand and we are eagerly waiting to participate in the election. We will also inspire JCD to participate in the polls”.

Later, Progressive Student Alliance at a press conference demanded to ensure coexistence of all students’ bodies on the campus and set up election booths in open places during the polls.
