SC scraps bail of ex-Shahjadpur mayor in Journo Shimul murder case

DHAKA, Jan 6, 2019 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC)
today scrapped bail granted by High Court to sacked mayor of Shahjadpur
Municipality in Sirajganj Halimul Haque Miru in journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul
murder case.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud
Hossain passed the order after holding hearing on a plea seeking cancellation
of the High Court order.

The High Court on November 4, 2018, granted bail to Miru after declaring a
rule ‘absolute’ issued in this regard. The state on November 5 filed an
appeal, pleading to stay the High Court order.

Shimul, a local correspondent of national daily Samakal, was shot to death
by Halimul Haque Miru on February 2, 2017. Shimul’s widow Nurunnahar Begum
later filed a case with local police against 18, including Miru.
