DHAKA, Jan 9, 2018 (BSS) – President Abdul Hamid yesterday asked police to work cordially with utmost devotion so that no service-seeker was harassed anyway as he joined a reception to mark the Police Week 2018.
“Ensure harassment-free services to the people keeping in mind that getting proper services is service-seekers the constitutional right . . . it’s not any kindness or donation on anyone’s part”, the president told the function at Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbag Police Lines here.
The president reminded the policemen that ordinary people usually prefer to keep away from police or police stations and only seek police help when they are exposed to extreme helplessness.
“The people could develop full confidence in police whenever they would be able to think police as their friends and get expected services during their bad times,” he said.
President Hamid, however, noted that police force played very significant role in improving law and order all over the country and particularly put in its relentless efforts to contain terrorism and militancy, arrest criminals and submit rapidly charge-sheets of sensational cases.
President Hamid said the police has also important role in the country’s socio-economic development by maintaining law and order, providing protection of public lives and property and establishment of rule of law.
“The improvement of law and order is the prerequisite to stability and advancement of a country. If the law and order situation and public safety are hampered, the development becomes stagnant, people feel insecure, investment is obstructed and the overall economy gets a setback,” he said.
He said it is noticed in the newspapers that the cybercrime is uprising gradually and those who engaged in the crimes are mostly juvenile and young generation.
Mentioning that drug addiction and abuse of narcotics lead the young generation to crimes, the President put emphasis on implementing “Zero Tolerance Policy” against illegal drugs.
The President hoped that each member of Bangladesh police would perform their duty with utmost professionalism, sincerity and honesty to fulfill the expectation of the country and its people being imbued with the spirit of the 1971 liberation War.
At the outset of the speech, the President paid rich tribute to the founding Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the patriotic soldiers who embraced martyrdom during the War of Liberation, specially the police members who were brutally killed in the 25 March black night in 1971, and others who made their supreme sacrifice in different democratic movement and for ensure the right of the mass people.
Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, Public Security Division Secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin, senior police officials and secretaries concerned to the President, among others, were present on the occasion.
