People’s aspiration to democracy reflected in Bangladesh’s polls: EU
Dhaka, Jan 1, 2019 (BSS) – The European Union (EU) today said the
aspiration of the Bangladesh’s people to democracy was reflected in the
Sunday’s election as the mobilisation of voters was found and the opposition
participated in the election for the first time in 10 years.
“The European Union expects the country (Bangladesh) to move forward
towards democracy, the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms,”
said EU spokesperson Maja Kocijancic in a statement on parliamentary election
of Bangladesh.
The EU will continue to support the work in this context and the interest
of the people of Bangladesh, the statement reads.
However, it said violence has marred the election-day and alleged that some
obstacles have tainted the electoral campaign and the vote.
