UNDP, Walton ink deal to protect ozone layer

DHAKA, Jan 1, 2018 (2018) – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
has signed an agreement with Walton to protect the ozone layer of the plant
and help the government achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNDP resident representative in Bangladesh Sudipto Mukerjee and managing
director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited SM Ashraful Alam signed the
agreement recently on behalf of their respective sides.

The agreement was signed under the Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) phase out
project at the latter’s office in the city, a UNDP press release said.

After the ratification of the Montreal Protocol in 1990, UNDP has been
working with the Bangladesh government and private industries to protect the
ozone layer by phasing out ozone depleting substances.

With financial support from the Montreal Protocol, UNDP and the Ministry
of Environment, Forest and Climate Change will support Walton, the largest
refrigerator manufacturer in Bangladesh, to phase out HFCs used in
refrigerators and air conditions, which are also contributing to global
warming.

Earlier in 2011, UNDP supported Walton to phase out HCFC.

“UNDP is proud of being partner with Walton in the world’s single largest
private sector conversion project to save the planet and help achieve the
Sustainable Development Goal-12 – Sustainable Consumption and Production,”
Sudipto Mukerjee Said.

He thanked the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and
the Montreal Protocol for partnering with UNDP.

Ashraful Alam highlighted Walton’s efforts to keep Bangladesh green.
“Conservation of environment is always our top priority and we are glad to
take part in this journey with UNDP to save the Ozone layer,” he added.

UNDP assistant resident representatives Khurshid Alam and Shaila Khan,
UNDP climate change specialist Mamunur Rashid, and other senior officials of
UNDP and WALTON were present.
