Pulse cultivation gains popularity in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH Jan 6, 2018 (BSS) – Farmers in all the five upazilas of
Panchagarh district are showing more interest in farming different varieties
of pulse after getting favourable weather and its high price.

Officials at local office of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)
said pulses cultivation has been increasing in the district since 2015.

Under the DAE’s Rabi crops cultivation programme, about 350 hectares of
land is brought under Mashkalai (black gram) cultivation this year while 150
hectares under Masur cultivation, 120 hectares under Khesari cultivation and
160 hectares under Sesame seed (Til) and pea cultivation.

Farmers said once pulse cultivation was not popular in the district, but
they are now cultivating pulses due to its high market price.

The DAE have set up demonstration plots of the cash crop for disseminating
knowledge and technology among farmers, the DAE officials said.
