Election campaign gets momentum in Khulna

KHULNA, Dec 20, 2018 (BSS) – With nine days left, campaign for all the six
constituencies in Khulna district for the parliamentary election, has reached
at its peak as all the candidates are passing very busy days.

The candidates specially from Awami League and BNP are seen meeting voters
irrespective of age, sex and creed and cast with posters and leaflets to drum
up support for them from early morning to mid night.

Flanked by a large number of leaders and workers, the MP contestants are
also seen meeting voters and different professional bodies seeking their
support throughout the day braving fog as well as cold wave as all six Khulna
constituencies got a new look with numerous posters, banners and festoons.
Apart from male workers, the presence of female workers in the election
campaign is significant this time as over one lakh women are taking part in
the ongoing electioneering.

A total of 35 candidates are vying for all the six constituencies in the
district for the upcoming parliament election scheduled to be held on
December 30.

Talking with thousand of voters in all the six constituencies in last
couple of days it has been come to know that four constituencies where
competition will take place between Awami League and BNP candidates while in
two others, fight will be between Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami
candidates.

In constituency-1, incumbent AL MP Panchanon Biswas and BNP candidate Amir
Ezaz Khan are the main contesters. .

Ex -AL MP Noni Gopal Mondol is contesting as a rival candidate from AL.
Jatiya Party (Ershad) presidium member Sunil Shuvo Roy will also contest in
the seat.

In constituency-2, fight will be held between Awami League candidate Sheikh
Salahuddin Jewel, nephew of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman, and BNP candidate Nazrul Islam Manju.

In constituency-3, contest will be held between former state minister Begum
Munnujan Sufiyan and BNP candidate former central JSD leader Rokibul Islam.

Begum Munnujan Sufiyan, central AL leader, won as MP defeating BNP
candidate Sekendar Ali in 2008 and independent candidate Moniruzzaman Khan in
2014 while she was defeated by BNP candidate Ashraf Hossain in 1991.

In constituency-4, former eminent footballer and BGMEA president Abdus
Salam Murshedy chosen by AL and Azizul Bari Helal nominated from BNP are the
main competitors.

In constituency-5, five people from different political parties are
contesting. AL has nominated Fisheries and Live Stock Minister Narayan
Chandra Chanda for this seat while BNP has left the seat for Mia Golam
Parwar, the nayeb-e-amir of central Jamaat-e-Islami.

There are two new faces from both BNP and AL in Khulna-6 constituency.
Akhtaruzzaman Babu will be contesting from AL while Abul Kalam Azad will be
contesting from this constituency from BNP alliance.

Deputy Commissioner, also returning officer, Md Helal Hossain said
peaceful atmosphere is prevailing here. A total of 35 candidates are
contesting for 6 constituencies.

“Executive magistrates, observer teams and members of different law
agencies are cautious to hold a free fair peaceful and acceptable election.”
