EC Mahbub hopes for holding free and fair polls

DHAKA, Dec 17, 2018 (BSS)- Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder today expressed his optimism that the 11th parliamentary election will be held in a free, fair and credible manner.

“I’m optimistic. I hope that the upcoming polls will be held in a free, fair and credible manner. The executive and judicial magistrates and judges of electoral inquiry committees should have to work more actively,” he told reporters at his office at Nirbachan Bhaban in city’s Agargaon.

Mahbub said, “We don’t conduct the polls directly. The election is held through concerned returning officers and law enforcement agencies. High officials of law enforcement agencies are under control of the Election Commission.”

Urging all concerned to obey the electoral code of conduct, the commissioner said holding of the national election is a massive task. “No one including candidates, voters and law-enforcers can go beyond the law and order. Obey the electoral code of conduct to make the polls a success”, he added.

Earlier, a delegation of Jatiya Oikyafront led by Dr Kamal Hossain met with Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.

Four election commissioners led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed were present during the meeting.

After the meeting, Dr Kamal said the Jatiya Oikyafront will not boycott the forthcoming polls at any cost.

The other members of the Jatiya Oikyafront present there were BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Kader Siddique, JSD President ASM Abdur Rab, BNP leaders Nazrul Islam Khan, Dr Moin Khan and Abdul Awal Mintu, Gana Forum leader Mostafa Mahsin Montu and Dr Jafrullha Chowdhury.
