Rangpur people celebrating Victory Day amid festivities

RANGPUR, Dec 16, 2018 (BSS) – The city of Rangpur turned into a place of
jubilation as the people are celebrating the Victory Day-2018 here today amid
colourful festivities paying rich tributes to the martyred sons and daughters
of the nation.

The auspicious day is being celebrated with a renewed pledge to spread true
national history among young generations to inspire them with spirit of the
War of Liberation.

Thousands of soothing people started rushing to the Central Shaheed Minar
and Independence Memorial ‘Arjan’ in the city since zero hours and continued
placing wreaths till this noon.

The district administration, Rangpur City Corporation, Awami League (AL)
and other political parties and their associate bodies, freedom fighters,
educational and other institutions and organisations are celebrating the day
through daylong programmes.

The celebrations began with 31-gun salutes at Police Lines ground, placing
wreaths at Independence Memorial ‘Arjan’ and Central Shaheed Minar in the
city and hoisting of the national flag atop government, semi-government and
private buildings with the sunrise.

In Pirganj municipal town, Jatiya Sangshad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chowdhury, MP, paid rich tribute to the martyrs of the War of Liberation by
placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar there this morning.

Acting President of Pirganj upazila AL Azizul Haque Ranga, its General
Secretary and Pirganj municipal Mayor Tazimul Islam Shamim, President of
district Chhatra League Mehedee Hasan Rony and local AL leaders were present.

In Rangpur city, Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Joynul Bari, Deputy
Inspector General for Rangpur Range Devdas Bhattacharya, Deputy Commissioner
Enamul Habib, Police Super Mizanur Rahman and officials first placed wreaths
at Independence Memorial ‘Arjan’ after the sunrise.

Freedom fighters, acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed with
other leaders, City Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa with other leaders,
President of city BNP Mozaffar Hossain with other leaders placed wreaths at
the Central Shaheed Minar.

Later, leaders and activists of JASOD, CPB, BSD, Workers Party and other
political parties, NGOs, business, sociocultural, professional and human
rights organisations, educational institutions and other organisations placed
wreaths there.

The main buildings and government offices were illuminated, roads and road
islands colourfully decorated with the national flag and coloured miniature
flags, mini marathon and ‘Bijoy’ rallies brought out in the streets.

Thousands of people participated in the colourful Victory Day mini-
marathon that paraded the city streets from Begum Rokeya University campus to
Rangpur Zila School ground in the morning.

The Divisional Commissioner hoisted the national flag and took salute at
march-past and displays by freedom fighters, police, Ansar-VDP, BNCC, fire
service personnel, students, children, jail guards, scouts, rover scouts and
girl guides at Rangpur stadium.

The District Information Office screened documentary films on the War of
Liberation and Victory Day and freedom fighters and relatives of martyred
freedom fighters were accorded receptions.

Special prayers were offered at all mosques and other places of religious
worships seeking divine peace for departed souls of the martyred sons and
daughters of the soil during the War of Liberation, progress and welfare of
the nation and its people.

Improved diets were served to inmates of hospitals, jail, shelter homes of
the elderly citizens, day-care and child centres, orphanages, Government
Shishu Paribars and vagabond centres.

Drawing competitions for children, charity shooting competitions, special
discussions and sports competitions for women, charity football match and
Kabadi competition and essay competitions and discussions for students were
organised at different venues.

The ‘Swasswato Bangla Muktijoddha Jadughar (SBMJ)’ under management of
Rangpur Area Headquarters of Bangladesh Army organised Victory Day
Celebration Programmes on the War of Liberation on the ‘Mukta Mancha’ at SBMJ
premises in the city.

The main discussion will be held on the Central Shaheed Minar premises
here followed by prize distribution and cultural functions to end the
celebrations tonight.
