DU observes Martyred Intellectuals Day

DHAKA, Dec 14, 2018 (BSS) – The Dhaka University (DU) authorities today observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day in a befitting manner.

A series of programs were held to observe the day which include: hoisting of black flags, placing wreaths to the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard, offering special prayers and holding discussions on the supreme sacrifice of the most enlightened sons of the soil.

DU teachers and staff led by DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman paid homage at the Martyred Intellectual Memorial Museum at capital’s Mirpur.

A discussion was held at the Teacher-Student Centre with DU VC Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.

Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Md. Samad, Joint-secretary of Dhaka University Teachers’ Association Professor Dr. Tajin Aziz and members of associations joined the discussion.

While addressing the programme, Prof Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, “Intellectuals motivated Bengalees in the liberation war. The then Pakistan Intelligence wing head had long been planning to make this country ignormous. The plan was finalized on 14th December in 1971.”

“They killed Intellectuals by using some traitors of this country”, he added.

The VC also said that the Pakistani invaders wanted to make this country unintelligent by the killing of intellectuals.

Earlier, University teachers, students, officers and employees gathered at the premises of Aparajeya Bangla and then paid tribute to the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard near university’s central mosque, memorials near Jagannath hall and others memorials in the different residential areas on the campus.

Special prayers were offered at the Central Mosque of the university along with the other mosques and places of worship of different faiths for praying peace upon the souls of martyred intellectuals.
