Nation observes ‘Begum Rokeya Day’ with due solemnity

DHAKA, Dec 9, 2018 (BSS) – Marking the birth and death anniversary of Begum
Rokeya, the Begum Rokeya Day was observed throughout the country in a
befitting manner.

Begum Rokeya, who was a fierce champion of gender equality, was born at
Pairaband village under Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur district on December 9,
1880 and died on the same day in 1932 in Kolkata.

The birth and death anniversaries of Rokeya have been officially observed
as Rokeya Day since 1994.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate
messages marking the day.

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs arranged “Rokeya Padak-2018”
distribution programme marking the ‘Rokeya Dibosh’ at Bangabandhu
International Conference Centre here today.

This year, five prominent women of the country received the Begum Rokeya
Award for their outstanding role in empowering womenfolk.

The Rokeya Hall authorities of Dhaka University (DU) brought out a
colourful procession from the Rokeya Hall premises on the campus which
paraded different streets of the town.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Rokeya Hall provost Zinat
Huda and a good number of students participated in the rally.

Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) in observance of the Rokeya Day-
2018 on the campus arranged various programmes including placing of wreaths
at the portrait of Begum Rokeya, inauguration of Rokeya Book Fair and
exhibition of her books, seminar, quiz, competitions and staging of drama
based on Rokeya’s story.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) of BRUR Professor Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah
inaugurated the programme by placing wreaths at the portrait of Begum Rokeya
followed by bringing out of a huge ‘Shobhayatra’ on the campus.
