Experts call for preventing cyber crimes

RAJSHAHI, Dec 9, 2018 (BSS)- Communication experts and academics at a
discussion here on Saturday unequivocally called for ensuring best uses of
internet and social communication media for the sake of preventing cyber
crimes.

They mentioned that the present government has adopted various time-
fitting measures to end cyber crimes. So, all the government and private
entities concerned should come forward and work together to supplement the
government endeavor.

They came up with the observation while addressing a daylong workshop
titled ‘Strengthening Publicity Programme for Ensuring Best Uses of Internet
and Social Communication Media’.

Directorate of Mass Communication (DMC) organized the strategy selection
and development related workshop in the regional office conference room of
Press Information Department (PID).

Addressing the event as focal person, DMC Director General Zakir Hossain
underscored the need for creating awareness among cross-section of people
about the dire consequences of cyber crimes.

“With the advancement of information technology, the nature and rate of
cyber crimes are increasing. Accordingly, the cyber criminals are also being
brought to justice,” he added.

He also urged the facebook users to remain alert during using the social
media.

Chaired by district information officer Md Shamsuzzaman, the meeting was
addressed, among others, by DMC Director (Publicity and Coordination) Toyab
Ali and Senior Information Officer of PID Faruque Abdul Momin.

During his keynote presentation, Dr Ali Hossain, assistant professor of
Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Rajshahi University of
Engineering and Technology (RUET), said cyber crimes cover many offences.

He mentioned that cyber crime is the unlawful act wherein the computer
information technology is used either as a tool or a target or both.

He underscored the need for taking preventive measures against those
involved in cyber crimes to rein in the growing menace.

Awareness should be raised among people about cyber crimes, related laws
and punishment, he said adding that relevant professionals, experts and the
mass media could play a responsible role in this regard.

The RUET teacher said internet is undoubtedly the most crucial technology
of the modern world, the useful applications of it have not only made our
life easier than ever before, it also plays a very important role in
education, entertainment and business.

“But it has its negative aspects too. It has ushered in a vast world for
criminals in society. The biggest threat of the internet is security risk,”
he said.
