Industrial sector’s contribution to national income doubles in 10yrs

DHAKA, Dec 6, 2018 (BSS) – Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu today said the contributions of the industrial sector in the country’s national income increased to 33.71 percent in the fiscal 2017-18 from 17.77 percent in 2007-08 as the government has implemented various programmes during the period.

“In the last five years of my tenure as the industries minister, the ministry has taken different initiatives to achieve the goal of industrialisation across the country. There has been a positive change in the industrial sector, including state-owned enterprises, during the period,” he said.

The minister was speaking at a press conference on the “Achievement of Industries Ministry in the last five years” at the ministry’s conference room in the city.

In the last five years, he said, the government made different laws and rules to achieve the goals of sustainable and knowledge based industrialisation.

Amu said the government has established an environment friendly leather industrial city at Savar for expediting the country’s leather industry and protect the Buriganga River from pollution.

He said the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has established 76 industrial cities across the country as per its aim to promote industrialisation at the grassroots level.

The industrial cities have created employment opportunities for 30 lakh people, he added.

The industries minister said the government is implementing a project for creating employment opportunities in every house as per the announcement of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Under the project, he said, a total of 23,310 people received training and 7,525 people got job after the training.

In the last five years, he said, a total of 47 organisations received the “Productivity and Quality Excellence Award”.

Sixteen organisations, covering all major six categories of industrial units, are going to get the “National Productivity and Quality Excellence Award-2017” on December 11 for their significant contribution to the industrial sector through maintaining productivity and quality of products, he added.
