Sheikh Hasina to become PM again: Nasim
DHAKA, Dec 5, 2018 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim today expressed hope that people of the country would again vote for Sheikh Hasina in the upcoming 11th parliamentary polls and make her prime minister.
“The health sector of the country saw unprecedented success in the last ten years. All the credit goes to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina…So, I do believe she would be reelected,” he said.
The minister came up with the observations while unveiling cover of a book titled “Shafoller Joare Bangladesher Sasthya: Bissher Bismoy (Tide of Success in Bangladesh’s Health Sector: Wonder of the World)” and addressing a press briefing on the success of the ministry in last 10 years at the secretariat.
Secretary (Health Services) of the ministry Asadul Islam presented achievements in the sector.
Medical Education and Family Welfare Division Secretary G M Saleh Uddin, Director General (DG) of Directorate General of Health Services Professor Dr Abul Kalam Azad and DG of Directorate General of Family Planning Dr Kazi Mustafa Sarwar were present on the occasion, among others.
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in 2013 wrote that people, who termed Bangladesh as bottomless basket after the independence, could not even imagine it would make such progress after coming out of that situation, Nasim said.
We should think how a country, which was ultra poor a couple of decades ago, achieved such astonishing progress in social indexes including health sector, he added.
Saying the average life expectancy in Bangladesh has risen up to 72.8 years, the health minister said, adding the country has achieved progress more than it’s expectation including reduction of maternal and child deaths.
“Such achievements in spite of limited resources, poverty and huge population are exemplary. Bangladesh has won a total of 16 international prizes in health sector. Now the rate of deaths of children below five stands at 34.2 in every thousand and deaths of children below one stands at 31 in every thousand. Rate of newborn deaths stands at 19 in every thousand now. Rate of maternal deaths now stands at 172 in one lakh,” he added.
