Children play on Ganabhaban premises

DHAKA, Dec 30, 2017 (BSS) – The schoolchildren who received textbooks from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today spent some time at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the premier, by playing games.

“After receiving textbooks, the schoolchildren numbering 20 sought permission from the prime minister to play on Ganabhaban premises,” PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan told BSS.

When the prime minister allowed them to play, the kids burst into joy and started playing on the south lawn of Ganabhaban. They also got on different rides including cradles, ladders and slippers situated there, Khokan said.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated a free textbook distribution programme for the academic year 2018 by handing over textbooks to 20 pre-primary, primary, secondary, ibtedayi, dakhil vocational, SSC vocational, small anthropological group and visually-challenged students.

After handing over the books, the prime minister had photographs with them, the deputy press secretary said.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Primary and Mass Education Minister Advocate Mustafizur Rahman spoke, while Education Secretary Sohrab Hossain conducted the function.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Primary and Mass Education Ministry Motahar Hossain, PM’s Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim, National Curriculum and Textbook Board Chairman Prof Narayan Chandra Saha were, among others, present on the occasion.

The “National Textbook Festival” is set to be celebrated across the country on January 1.

The education minister said the festival will be celebrated by distribution of a total of 35,42,90,162 textbooks among over 4 crore 37 lakh pre-primary, primary, secondary, ibtedayi, dakhil vocational, SSC vocational, small anthropological groups and visually-challenged students across the country on January 1.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and Minister of Primary and Mass Education Mustafizur Rahman will open the central programme of this year’s “National Textbook Festival” separately at Azimpur Government Girls’ School and Dhaka University Central Playground in the capital on the New Year’s Day.

The present government started distributing free textbooks from 2010 academic year.
