Govt earns Tk 111 cr from land ports: Shajahan

BENAPOLE, Dec 30, 2017 (BSS) – The government has earned Taka 111 crore revenue from land ports of the country as compared to Taka 28 crore in 2009, said Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan.

“The revenue earning from the land ports was only Taka 28 crore in 2009, which rose to Taka 111 crore now as the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened 11 more land ports in the country,” he while presiding over an advisory committee meeting on land port development and speeding up operational activities at Benapole port yesterday.

The minister said there are 22 land ports in the country, of which 12 land ports are now in operation, adding, “We will inaugurate one more land port by the next month.”

Considering passengers’ sufferings, he said, the government constructed a passenger terminal having modern facility at Benapole land port at the instruction of the Prime Minister. “We are also constructing a shed and a terminal for transshipment.”

Besides, the government has undertaken a project to construct a truck terminal on 150 acres of land along with modernizing the land port funded by the World Bank for smooth operation and it would be implemented by 2018, he said.

“Two warehouses, an integrated check post terminal and a four-lane road for internal communication are being constructed at Benapole land port,” he added said.

The meeting was also addressed, among others, by lawmaker Alhaj Sheikh Afil Uddin, chairman of Bangladesh Landport Authority (BLA) Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, joint secretary of the ministry M Shafayet Hossain, secretary of BLA Habibur Rahman, divisional commissioner of Khulna Lokman Hossain and member of the National Board of Revenue Lutfar Rahman.
