Govt refutes social media rumour on ‘purchasing’ teachers involved in polls

DHAKA, Dec 02, 2018 (BSS) – The government today refuted an issue spread on social media about ‘purchasing’ teachers and employees involved in the electoral process, terming it orchestrated rumor centering the forthcoming election.

“The news on social media about purchasing polling agents by paying Taka 225 crore to non-government teachers-employees welfare trust through a cheque numbered-Ka 7211014, dated 25/11/18 is a motivated rumor centering the election,” said a PID handout here today.

It said ‘rumour identification and prevention cell’ of the Information Ministry has confirmed the matter as rumour, completely untruth and motivated.

The actual information is that the non-government teachers-employees welfare trust and retirement benefit fund is used only for the MPO-listed non-government teachers and employees who have already retired, the handout said.

“This allotment is never used for those who are now in service. None of the retired teachers or employees discharges electoral duties. The incumbent teachers and employees of the republic discharge electoral duties,” it said.

As the allotment is not for incumbent teachers and employees, there is no question of getting benefits by the teachers and employees involved in the polls process from the funds, the handout added.

“So, the information of ‘purchasing polling agent’ for Taka 225 crore is a rumor,” it said.
