Shakib, Mahmudullah keep Tigers on course in 2nd Test

DHAKA, Nov 30, 2018 (BSS)- A captaincy knock half century came from the
bat of Shakib Al Hasan and a responsible batting knock by Mahmudullah saw
Bangladesh recovered from batting disaster as they scored 259 for 5 at stumps
against visiting West Indies on the first day of the second and final Test at
Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur on Friday.

The ace all-rounder Shakib scored an unbeaten 55 runs and also shared 69
runs for the sixth wicket stand with Mahmudullah after Bangladesh slipped 5
for 190.

The left handed batsman Shakib hit one boundary during his patient 113-
ball stay on the crease while Mahmudullah, giving him a good support, also
stayed with 31 off 59 balls with one boundary to finish the day ensuring no
further damage keeping both their wickets unhurt on the first day.

Earlier, opted to bat first after winning the toss, the two Bangladesh
openers– debutant Shadman Islam and Soumya Sarkar– got off to a good start
contributing 42-run for the opening stand before Roston Chase brought the
breakthrough for West Indies removing Soumya for 19.

The left-hander went for an expansive drive and nicked the chase delivery
to the man at first slip off Roston Chase delivery.

Shadman and Mominul Haque looked untroubled before Mominul was out to a
loose delivery to give the wicket to fast bowler Kemar Roach just before the
lunch break. Mominul, the hero of the first Test, made 29 off 46 smashing two
boundaries.

Debutant opener Shadman Islam, who scored his maiden half century,
composed 76 runs off 199 balls, got Mithun as the support when the duo shared
for a 64-run partnership before Bishoo came in action making Mithun clean
bowled for 31 runs.

Devendra Bishoo then scalped the wicket of Shadman trapping him leg before
wicket as Bangladesh went to tea scoring 175 for 4.

Wicket keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who sustained his finger injury
during the net practice session, could not stand longer scoring 14 off 24
balls before being clean bowled by Shermon Lewis’s delivery.

Mushfiqur, who scored 4,000 club runs during his brief stay on the crease,
needed only eight runs to reach the feat before the play when he cut leg
spinner Devendra Bishoo off the back foot in the 65th over.

Devendra Bishoo was the pick of West Indies bowler as he claimed two
Bangladesh’s wickets giving away 69 runs.
