Strengthening cooperative movement stressed to enhance productivity

RANGPUR, Nov 26, 2018 (BSS) – Strengthening of the cooperative movement has
become indispensible to further enhance productivity in every rural sector
for attaining the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by cutting poverty.

High officials and cooperative activists made these observations at a
post-rally discussion organised by the Divisional Cooperatives Office at Town
Hall here on Sunday afternoon in observance of the 47th National Cooperative
Day-2018.

Earlier, the Divisional Cooperatives Office brought out a rally on the city
streets with participation of government officials and employees, leaders and
activists of different cooperative organisations, civil society members and
elite.

Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Joynul Bari led the rally and addressed
the discussion as the chief guest with local cooperative activist Mohammad
Ali Jinnah in the chair.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Rangpur Range of Bangladesh Police
Devdas Bhattacharya, Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib and Joint Registrar of
Divisional Cooperatives Office Md Ameer Azam addressed as special guests.

District Cooperative Officer Tauhiduzzaman Khondker delivered welcome
speech discussing the laudable successes already achieved through cooperative
activities to increase productivity and develop human resources in last 10-
year.

He emphasised on ensuring good governance in the cooperative organisations
at the grassroots levels to enhance productivity, achieve self-reliance
through self-employments, cottage enterprises and industries.

Ameer Azam suggested for ensuring proper management in disbursing
cooperative loans among the poor to enhance productivity for eliminating
poverty from the society on way to achieve all targets and goals of the SDGs
by 2030.

The DIG stressed on providing skill enhancement training to the unemployed
rural youths, including women, through cooperative societies to assist them
in alleviating poverty through income generation activities.

The chief guest called for enhancing cooperative loan schemes for small and
marginal farmers, entrepreneurs and backward sections to change fortune of
the cooperative members across the country.

“A successful cooperative movement would enhance productivity in all rural
sectors to build a middle income nation by 2021 and a developing country by
2024 and achieving the SDGs by 2030 on way to build a developed Bangladesh by
2041,” he added.
