Rafiqul Islam Miah arrested

DHAKA, Nov 20, 2018 (BSS) – Police today arrested BNP standing committee
member barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah as a Dhaka court sentenced him to three-
year imprisonment for not submitting wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC).

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police picked Rafiqul Islam up from
his residence in the city’s Eskaton area this evening, said Krishna Pado Roy,
additional commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Earlier in the day, Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 sentenced Rafiqul Islam
Miah to three years imprisonment for not submitting wealth statement to the
national anti-graft agency. The court also fined him Taka 50,000. In default,
he has to suffer three months imprisonment.

The court also issued arrest warrant against him as it pronounced the
judgment in his absence today.

On April 7, 2001, the then Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) issued a notice
upon him asking to submit wealth statement to the Commission. The ACB on
January 15, 2004, filed a case with Uttara Police Station against barrister
Rafiqul Islam Miah as he failed to submit the report within stipulated time.

On November 14, 2017, the court ordered to initiate the case after taking
into cognisance the charges framed against him. The court today pronounced
the verdict after examining six witnesses in the case.
