DHAKA, Dec 28, 2017 (BSS) – Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) today opened a specialized government fisheries market for the first time at city’s Jatrabari with the aim to sell hygienic and formalin free fishes to the consumers.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Narayan Chandra Chanda inaugurated the fish market. The six-storied fisheries centre has been constructed at a cost of Taka 7.39 crore, said an official handout.

With BFDC Chairman Dildar Ahmed in the chair, the inaugural programme was also attended, among others, by Habibur Rahman Molla MP and Fisheries and Livestock Secretary M Maksudul Hasan Khan as special guests.

The Dhaka City Fisheries Marketing Facility Center has been constructed under Dhaka City Fisheries Marketing Facility Installation Project, having 61 godowns, 61 fish shops and 61 lodges for the fish traders.

Under the project, the BFDC constructed the fish market after purchasing abandoned 15 decimal land of Roads and Highways Department. The newly constructed fish market also has a bank and a restaurant for the facilities of the fish traders.

“The objective of the project is to modernize fisheries landing and marketing, now being done in an unhygienic environment,” said the State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock in his address, adding that the fisheries landing and marketing would be conducted in a hygienic way for supplying formalin-free fishes in Dhaka city.

The government will earn Taka 2 crore from the fish market annually.
