Revival of silk, cottage and handloom goods stressed

RAJSHAHI, Nov 20, 2018 (BSS)- Speakers at a discussion here unanimously mentioned there is a need for holistic approach towards revival of silk, cottage and hand-loom goods for bolstering economic condition of the region.

They viewed ensuring business-friendly atmosphere is very important to encourage local entrepreneurs for revitalizing the sector. Time-fitting measures should be taken to revive the region’s industrial sector including the cottage and handloom industries as those play a vital role in the economic development.

They made this observation while addressing the inaugural session of a month-long ‘Winter-dress, Silk, Handicrafts and Cottage Goods Fair- 2018’ at Green Plaza of Rajshahi City Corporation here today.

District unit of Women Entrepreneurs Association of Bangladesh (WEAB) organized the fair aims at promoting the sector.

In the fair, a spectrum of locally produced handicrafts goods including leather products, jute-made products, processed agricultural products, electrical and electronic goods, clothes, design and fashion wares and other products are being exhibited in around 30 stalls. Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) AHM Khairuzzaman Liton attended and addressed the ceremony as chief guest with WEAB local unit president Anzuman Ara Parveen in the chair. Additional Commissioner (Development and ICT) of Rajshahi division Anwar Hossain, RCC Chief Executive Officer Shah Mumin, local unit chairman of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Morjina Parveen and President of Bangladesh Silk Industries Owners Association Liakat Ali also spoke. Mayor Liton says the present government is very much positive to flourish the industrial sector for elevating socio-economic condition of the region.

Expansion of the industrial estate of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) here is under process that will help creating employment opportunities for around 5,000 people.

A fresh project to this end has been conceived to acquire 50 acres of land to develop 308 industrial plots in the area to ensure the devolvement of small and medium enterprises (SME) in the region. The government has taken the responsibility of providing industrial plots to the actual entrepreneurs as per the necessity.

He said the present government has a separate view-point towards Rajshahi’s development and intends to accelerate its socio-economic improvement through the best use of the existing industrial potentialities. It is very much committed to ensure proper utilization of allocated plots for industrial purpose aiming to promote industrialization in the country.

Liton said the government has given special emphasis on building planned industrial estates throughout the country to attain the goal of sustainable and eco-friendly industrialization.
