President, PM pay tributes to Poet Sufia Kamal

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2018 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today paid rich tributes to the memory of poet Begum Sufia Kamal on the occasion of her 19th death anniversary tomorrow.

In his message, the President said “Sufia Kamal was a pioneer of the movement for women rights and a bold warrior against religious dogmatism. She played an active role in language movement, struggle for freedom, the War of Liberation and every movement of human rights”.

Abdul Hamid said the great woman was one of the key-organisers of the movement for war crime trial.

Sufia Kamal didn’t just make herself educated but waged movement to bring scopes for backward womenfolk, the President said, adding that Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, which was established by Sufia Kamal, is a unique institution to realize the women rights.

Because of her outstanding contribution to different democratic, social and cultural movements, she was titled as “Janani Sahasika”, Hamid said, adding, “She will be ever remembered among us because of her versatile talents”.

The Prime Minister, in her message, said, “I convey my profound respect to the memory of Begum Sufia Kamal, one of the pioneers of progressive, non-communal, democratic and women emancipation movements in Bangladesh.”The write-ups of Poet Sufia Kamal in all branches of literature stir the readers, the Prime Minister added.

The thoughts of Begum Rokeya had a far-reaching impact on the life of Sufia Kamal, the premier said recalling her role in the movement against banning Tagore songs by Pakistan government in 1961.

Sheikh Hasina said Sufia Kamal was the image of a traditional Bengali woman and an affectionate mother. On the other hand, she had played an uncompromising role in every movement in Bangladesh, she added.

She said Sufia Kamal’s role inspired the pro-liberation forces when the distortion of history began in the country after the assassination of the Greatest Bangalee of all times Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.

They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Begum Sufia Kamal.
