Seminar on earthquake held at DU

DHAKA, Nov 18, 2018 (BSS) – With a view to creating awareness among people
regarding earthquake to reduce the losses of life and property, a day-long
symposium titled ‘Earthquake Prediction, Preparedness and Response’ was held
today at Dhaka University (DU).

Department of Disaster Science and Management of DU organised the
programme at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) of DU Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the
symposium as the chief guest.

Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmad addressed it as
special guest with Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of
DU Prof. Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal in the chair.

Director of Earthquake Monitoring and Prediction Technology Research Centre
of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School of China Prof. Wang Xinan also
addressed the event.

While addressing the event, Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman stressed the need
for creating awareness among the people regarding earthquake. He also urged
the people to follow the building code while making buildings to avoid any
kind of disaster.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Disaster
Science and Management of Dhaka University and the Earthquake Monitoring and
Prediction Technology Research Centre of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate
School, China was also signed today at the inaugural session of the
symposium.

According to the MoU, the two universities will exchange teachers and
students as well as conduct joint research activities.

Besides, Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School authorities will
provide support and cooperation for establishment of Earthquake Monitoring
and Prediction Technology Research Center at DU.
