AL complains to EC over Tarique’s involvement in nomination process

DHAKA, Nov 18, 2018 (BSS) – Awami League (AL) today submitted a written complaint to the Election Commission to take action against BNP fugitive acting chairman Tarique Rahman for his involvement in the party’ nomination process through teleconference.

A delegation of AL led by its Presidium Member Lt. Col. (retd) Muhammad Faruk Khan submitted the complaint to the EC at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon this evening. EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed received the letter.

After the submission, Faruk Khan told journalists that a convicted criminal has talked with nomination aspirants of BNP through teleconference which is clear violation of electoral code of conduct.

“There is a directive of the Supreme Court that any speech of Tarique Rahman cannot be disseminated through any medium. So, Tarique’s work (teleconference) is tantamount of contempt of court,” he said, adding that this could make the election system questionable.

Khan said BNP-Jamaat in the name of Oikyafront has conducted election campaign at the Supreme Court all over the day on Saturday. They made some remarks which violated the electoral code of conduct.

AL Organizing Secretary Barrister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury Nowfel said: “Tarique Rahman is interviewing nomination aspirants specifically through telecommunication. The country’s mass media reported on it.”

Nowfel said Tarique is now a convicted criminal and fugitive so that he cannot take part in the country’s election process and politics.

“BNP’s such acts of interviewing by a convicted criminal is illegal and unethical,” he added.
