IMF expects 3.5-3.7 pct Belarus’ GDP growth in 2018

MINSK, Nov. 16, 2018 (BSS/Xinhua) – The International Monetary Fund (IMF)
expected 3.5-3.7 percent growth of the Belarusian economy in 2018, Jacques
Miniane, head of the IMF mission to Belarus, told reporters on Thursday.

Belarus’ economy is in the process of sustainable recovery, but this
recovery is cyclical, not structural, Miniane said here at a briefing. High
prices for oil, high level of prices in foreign markets as well as a rapid
growth of wages are among key factors of the IMF forecast concerning the
Belarusian economy growth, the official said.

The expert said Belarus continues to suffer from some vulnerabilities –
narrow export geography and high dependence on the Russian Federation,
substantial dollarization as well as a high foreign debt.

The IMF recommended Belarus to use economic recovery to keep reducing
vulnerabilities and increasing potential growth.

In 2019, the IMF predicts Belarus’ GDP growth at the level of 2.5 percent.
