No scope to defer election: EC secretary

DHAKA, Nov 15, 2018 (BSS) – There is no scope of deferring the polls schedule and the 11th parliamentary election will be held on December 30, Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed today here said.

“The EC has taken the decision not to defer the polls schedule after thoroughly analyzing the demand of Oikyafront for deferring the election by three weeks. The demand is not logical and realistic,” he said at a press briefing at the media center of Nirbachan Bhaban in city’s Agargaon.

Earlier, a meeting of the commission was held with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in the chair.

Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (Retd) Shahdat Hossain and EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed were present in the meeting.

The EC secretary said, “The meeting analyzed the demand of the Oikyafront. There are some laws and constitution issues. We need time to resolve the issues such as by-elections, publishing gazette and oath taking ceremony of the newly elected lawmakers.”

Besides, the Biswa Ijtema will be held in second and third weeks of January where thousands of devotees will participate and a good number of law enforcers will be deployed, Ahmed said, adding, “So that there is no scope of deferring the polls schedule.”

About the foreign observers, the EC secretary said, “We always welcome the observers.”
