65 held in 3 cases filed over Naya Paltan violence

DHAKA, Nov 15, 2018 (BSS) – Police have detained at least 65 people, mostly leaders and activists of BNP and its front organizations, from different parts of the city for their alleged involvement in attack on police at Naya Paltan here on Wednesday.

The cases were filed on Wednesday night with Paltan police station on charge of vandalism, arson attack and obstructing police from discharging their duties.

Police have accused Afroza Abbas, wife of BNP leader Mirza Abbas, former BNP lawmaker Major (Retd) Akhteruzzaman and BNP leader Nabiullah Nabi for masterminding the attack.

According to police, several hundred leaders and workers of BNP, mostly supporters of BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas, suddenly attacked on duty police personnel as they were trying to clear the road for traffic movement which was occupied with big processions.

At one stage, they drove away the police personnel from the road and set fire on two police cars. The angry attackers also damaged several dozens of private vehicles on the street at that time.

Police detained some people from the spot and later conducted raids in different parts of the city after scrutinizing video footages of the attack.
