Call for updating workforce with need-based skills

DHAKA, Nov 14, 2018 (BSS) – Speakers at a function in the city today suggested exploring the potential job markets globally and update the country’s huge workforce with need-based skills as the developed world is gradually shifting towards full automation.

They came up with the suggestion at a reception accorded to Chief Executive Officer of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) AB M Khorshed Alam who was awarded the “Best NSDC CEO Award” during the meeting of the ‘World Skill International’ held at Amsterdam in Netherlands in mid-October, 2018, said a press release.

Informal Sector Industry Skill Council (ISISC) organised the reception at its office in the city.

Speaking on the occasion, Khorshed Alam said, “About 20 lakh people who enter the country’s job market annually should be transformed into skilled hands.”

For this, he said, a national survey should be conducted to assess the industry needs at various trades so that adequate number of workforce can be developed to fit them in jobs.

Khorshed Alam, also an additional secretary, said Bangladesh, being the newest member in the World Skills Council, is going to participate in the WorldSkills Competition at Kazan in Russia next year, which has been possible only for the visionary decision of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The participation of Bangladesh at the competition would help the country take its image at a new height because as the eighth-highest populated country, it deserves a prestigious position in the global market riding on its large manpower through enhancing their skills, he added.

SME Foundation Chairman and former secretary KM Habib Ullah chaired the function.

SME Foundation Managing Director M Shafiqul Islam, NSDC Director Rezaul Karim and Deputy Director M Kamruzzaman, among others, were present on the occasion.

KM Habib Ullah said Bangladesh’s recognition as the Best NSDC CEO among 60 countries at the meeting of the World Skill International is a great achievement for the country and this was possible for the dedication of ABM Khorshed Alam toward his job.

“This is a great pride for the public administration as it is a rare example of acquiring such an honourable recognition by a government official of the country,” he added.
