GAIBANDHA, DEC 26, 2017 (BSS) – Speakers at a function here on Monday said the persons with disabilities are the integral part and asset of the society, not burden.

“The persons with disabilities can make huge contribution to the society by flourishing their latent talent, if they are given care and educated properly”, they said.

They made the comments while addressing a discussion meeting organized by Protibandhi Seba Sangstha of Palashbri upazila here on the premises of Palashbari SMB High School yesterday.

The function was arranged aimed at increasing the mental improvement of the persons with disabilities and creating awareness among the common people about sympathy towards them.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gautam Chandra Pal addressed the function as the chief guest and Palashbari upazila nirbahi officer Mohammad Tofazzal Hossain was present at the event as the special guest.

With former MP Tofazzal Hossain Sarker in the chair, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by assistant commissioner (Land) Arif Hossain, district disability affairs officer Akter Hossain, officer in charge of Palashbari thana Mahmudul Alam, upazila social services officer Ariful Islam.

Nobody has any hand about the persons with disabilities but there is some negative perception about the disability and autism, they said.

Putting emphasis on coming out of negative perception about disability and autism, they said disability or autism is not a disease; rather it is a diversity of creation.

DC Gautam Chandra Pal in his speeches said many world famous personalities including Albert Einstein, Darwin, Newton, WB Yeats and Stephen Hawking were autism by born but autism or disability could not create any obstacle to flourishing their talents.

The government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had already enacted ‘Disabled Persons Rights and Protection Act in 2013’ for the welfare of the persons with disabilities side by side with taking beneficial activities for them, the DC also said.

Later, the DC handed over the blankets to the poor persons with disabilities on behalf of the organization to mitigate their sufferings caused by cold wave.

A large number of people including guardians, local elite, public representatives and journalists attended the function.
