DHAKA, Nov 6, 2018 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda today said there is no scope to defer the announcement of polls schedule, but the elections can be delayed if all political parties want.

The CEC said this replaying a question from journalists after attending a workshop at Electoral Training Institute (ETI) in the city’s Agargaon area.

On November 4, the Election Commission (EC) decided to declare the election schedule on November 8.

There is an obligation of holding the next general election within January 28, 2019, Huda said, adding that the elections should be held in December as different programmes take place in January along with resumption of the classes at all schools.

Earlier, addressing the inaugural session of the workshop, the CEC said there is no alternative to the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the elections to protect the voters’ interest.

There are many difficulties in using ballot papers in the elections. The EVM will be launched in the upcoming elections to avoid those difficulties, Huda said, adding, “There is no scope of vote rigging through EVM”.
