Butterfly fair held at JU

SAVAR, Nov 2, 2018 (BSS)- A daylong ‘Butterfly Fair-2018’ was held today
at Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus here to raise awareness among the
mass people to preserve butterflies in the environment.

With the slogan “Urley Akashe Projapoti, Prokriti Pay Notun Goti”, JU
Zoology Department in association with Prokriti O Jibon Foundation and
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) organised the fair at
the Zahir Raihan auditorium premises.

Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Farzana Islam inaugurated the fair by
releasing butterflies and balloons as the chief guest this morning.

JU VC said, “Butterflies are very important insect for the nature. Not only
having beauty, it also has importance on biodiversity. So we should take
initiative to conserve them in the environment.”

She lauded the organising committee and said, “Such initiative will
protect the butterfly species from the extinction. As our university has
favorable environment to conserve biodiversity, we are committed to protect
it,” she added.

Presided over by Convener of the butterfly fair Prof Monwar Hossain Tuhin,
JU Pro-VC (academic) Prof Md Nurul Alam, Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul
Huq, Dean of Biological Science Faculty Prof Abdul Zabbar Hawlader and
Chairman of Prokriti O Jibon Foundation Mukit Majumder Babu addressed the
function as special guests, among others.

After the inaugural session, a colorful rally, led by JU VC, brought out
from the Zahir Raihan auditorium premises that paraded different streets on
the campus.

Fahmia Sarkar Barsha got “Butterfly-Award 2018” this year.

In the fair, over 50 species of butterflies were exhibited at Butterfly
Park on the campus where a large number of people gathered to enjoy it.

The daylong fair was featured with art completion for the children, quiz
competition, debate competition, screened documentary on butterfly, live
butterfly display at butterfly-park and a short cultural session.
