RAJSHAHI, Oct 29, 2018 (BSS)- Experts and development activists here
unequivocally called for forging social resistance against lead poisoning for
substantial and sustainable reduction of mortality and morbidity.

They underscored the need for creating wide-ranging mass-awareness after
the best uses of both print and electronic media as well as the social ones.

They came up with the observation while addressing a view-sharing meeting
styled “Learn the Risks and Ban Lead Paint” at conference hall of Association
for Community Development (ACD), a rights-based development organisation,
Sunday.

ACD organized the meeting to mark the International Lead Poisoning
Prevention Week-2018.

Chaired by ACD Executive Director Salima Sarwar, the meeting was addressed
by Deputy Director of Department of Environment Mamunur Rashid and BSTI
Senior Chemist Subodh Chandra as chief and special guests respectively.

During his keynote presentation, Monirul Islam, Project Coordinator of
ACD, said the week provides an opportunity for organizations and institutions
around the world to focus attention about lead.

The theme of this year’s week is the need for individuals, civil society
organizations, industry and governments to work together to ban lead paint.

He added the government and non-government institutions, health service
providers, civil society organizations and international organizations have
carried out a wide range of activities and events to inform the public,
health professionals and policy makers about the health hazards of lead and
urge action to prevent lead exposure.

Referring to various research findings Monirul Islam said lead poisoning is
preventable. Particular concern is the role of lead exposure in the
development of intellectual disability in children.
