Deal inked to set up fertilizer factory at Ghorashal

DHAKA, Oct 24, 2018 (BSS) – The government today signed an agreement with two foreign companies to implement the Ghorashal-Polash Urea Fertilizer Project (GPUFP) to set up the country’s biggest urea fertilizer factory at Ghorashal in Narsingdi.

Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) Chairman Shah M Aminul Haque and Senior Vice President of the construction company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited Hajime Nagano and CEO of China National Chemical Engineering No-7 Construction Company Limited Wang Da Lin signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides at a function in a city hotel.

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu and Japanese Ambassador to Dhaka Hiroyasu Izumi witnessed the signing.

Speaking on the occasion, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu termed Bangladesh as the ‘Emerging Tiger’ in Asia and said many countries of the world are now willing to invest in Bangladesh.

“Japan is a time-tested friend of Bangladesh for a long time and through implementation of this project, more Japanese investment will come to Bangladesh in such bigger projects,” he added.

PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman, Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office Md Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Chairman of BIDA Kazi M Aminul Islam, Kamrul Ashraf MP, Secretary-in-Charge of the Industries Ministry M Abdul Halim spoke, among others, at the function.

Earlier this month, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the Taka 10,461 crore project to set up the granular urea fertilizer factory with an annual production capacity of 9.24 lakh metric tons.

Of the project cost, Taka 1,844.19 crore will come from the government while Taka 8,616.72 crore from bidders financing.

The ‘Ghorashal Polash Urea Fertilizer Project’ will be implemented by the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries by June 2022.
