JS passes Standards of Weights and Measures Bill, 2018

SANGSAD BHABAN, Oct 23, 2018 (BSS) – The Standards of Weights and Measures Bill, 2018
passed in the Jatiya Sangsad in an amended form with a view to make the local products
competitive in local and foreign markets and also make it overall well accepted all over the
world.

Industries Minister Amir Hossen Amu moved the bill in the House which was unanimously
passed by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Piloting the bill, the industries minister said the proposed act will help establish an accurate and
standard weights and measurement culture in the country.

The proposed act is containing rigorous imprisonment of not more than one year or monetary
punishment of not more than one lac taka for taking resort to any kind of forgery in product
measurement or both.

The propose standards of weights and measures bill, 2018 will replace the Standards of Weights
and Measures Ordinance, 1982 and also would review the Standards of Weights and Measures
(amendment) act, 2001, according to the bill.

The proposed act will contain 73 sections and one restructured schedule while the earlier act
contained only 65 sections and one schedule, it added.

Earlier, the Standards of Weights and Measures Bill, 2018 was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad on
September 19 in 2018 and then it was sent to the parliamentary standing committee for
providing report.
