PM assures of doing everything for football

DHAKA, Oct 12, 2018 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government would do everything required for development of football in the country and hoped that both boys and girls would perform better in this game in future.

“We will do everything necessary for development of soccer and give training to the players,” she said while distributing the trophy of Bangabandhu International Gold Cup Football Tournament at Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) here this evening.

“Football is the most popular game in Bangladesh which is played everywhere,” she said expressing satisfaction over successful completion of the 5th edition of the tournament.

The prime minister also praised Bangladesh’s recent success in a number of international football events saying,” Our Under-18 and Under-16 Women National Teams have started showing their capacity in international arena.”

She hoped that Bangladesh boys will also not be lagged behind and they will do better in future.

Sheikh Hasina said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was always sincere in sports.

Terming her family as a football family, the premier said, “My grandfather and father were football players while my brothers Sheikh Kamal and Sheikh Jamal used to play football.”

Sheikh Hasina hoped that Bangladesh would do better in sports in the coming days.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Dr Biren Sikder, Deputy Minister Arif Khan Joy, Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) President Kazi Salahuddin, Senior Vice President Abdus Salam Murshedi, MP, and Vice President Kazi Nabil Ahmed, among others, were present.

Palestine clinched the trophy defeating Tajikistan 4-3 goals in the tiebreaker in the final of the six-team tournament. Other countries took part in the tournament are Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines and Laos.

The prime minister handed over the trophy and cheques of prize money of the tournament to the captains and managers of the winning and runner-up teams.

She also distributed medals and prize money among the players of the winning and runner-up teams, referees, best player, highest goal scorer and best goalkeeper.

The tournament kicked off on October 1 last through the opening clash between Bangladesh and Laos.
