DU observes Int’l Day for Disaster Reduction

DHAKA, Oct 11, 2018 (BSS) – The International Day for Disaster Reduction-2018 was observed at Dhaka University (DU) today in a befitting manner.

The Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of the university brought out a procession from the premises of Aparajeyo Bangla, marking the day.

Teachers and students of various institutes and departments of the university joined procession, a DU press release said.

DU Vice-Chancellor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme.

DU Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Dr Nasreen Ahmad, Pro-VC of Bangladesh Open University Dr Khondaker Mokaddem Hossain and Director of the institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies Dr Mahbuba Nasrin were, among others, present.

While addressing the procession, Prof Akhtaruzzaman said:”Bangladesh is the role model of the world for disaster management. The damage of disasters has been reducing in the country day by day as the government takes various actions to cope with disaster consequences”.

He emphasised the need for creating awareness among people to reduce disaster-related loss and damage.

After the procession, a discussion was held at Lecture Theater building of the university.

The day is observed worldwide on October 13 every year since 1989.
