Victory Day celebration turns Rangpur into festive city

RANGPUR, Dec 16, 2017 (BSS) – The Victory Day- 2017 celebration has turned Rangpur into a festive city through various daylong programmes to pay rich tributes to the martyred best sons and daughters of the nation.

The day is being celebrated here today with a call to disseminate true national history among young generations to inspire them with spirit of the War of Liberation for building a developed ‘Sonar Bangla’ free from militancy, terrorism and drug.

Thousands of cheering people from all walks of life rushed to the Central Shaheed Minar and Independence Memorial ‘Arjan’ in the city since the zero hours to place wreaths.

The district administration, Rangpur City Corporation, district Awami League (AL), its associate bodies and other political parties, freedom fighters, different educational institutions and other organisations are celebrating the day through elaborate programmes.

The celebrations began at the zero hours with 31- gun salute at Police Lines Ground and placing wreaths at the Independence Memorial ‘Arjan’ and Central Shaheed Minar in the city.

Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Wahiduzzaman, Police Super Mizanur and District Muktijoddha Commander Mosaddek Hossain Bablu first placed wreaths.

Later, leaders of AL, its associate bodies and other political parties, different socio-cultural and professional organisations, heads of educational institutions and other organisations placed wreaths. The national flag was hoisted atop all public and private buildings, main buildings were illuminated, roads and road islands decorated with the national flag and coloured miniature flags, mini marathon and ‘Bijoy’ rallies brought out in the streets.

The Divisional Commissioner hoisted the national flag and took salute at march-past and displays by freedom fighters, police, Ansar-VDP, BNCC, fire service personnel, students, children, jail guards, scouts, rover scouts and girl guides at Rangpur stadium.

The District Information Office screened documentary films on the War of Liberation and Victory Day and freedom fighters and relatives of martyred freedom fighters were accorded receptions.

Special prayers were offered at the places of all religious worships seeking divine peace for departed souls of the martyred sons and daughters of the soil during the War of Liberation, progress and welfare of the nation and its people.

Improved diets were served to inmates of hospitals, orphanages, Government Shishu Paribars, jail, vagabond and children centres and shelter homes of the elderly people.

Drawing competitions for children, shooting competitions, special discussion and sports competitions for women, football matches, sports and essay competitions for students, prize distribution and cultural functions were organised at different venues.

The ‘Swasswato Bangla Muktijoddha Jadughar (SBMJ)’ under management of Rangpur Area Headquarters of Bangladesh Army organised Victory Day Celebration Programmes on the War of Liberation on the SBMJ’s ‘Mukta Mancha’ in the city.

The district administration will organise the main discussion to be followed by prize distribution and cultural functions to end the celebrations tonight at the Central Shaheed Minar premises in the city.
